 What is Flirt?

Flirt is a new embossing product from Spicers Paper in partnership with Tafeda, www.tafeda.com.au an Australian company passionate about embossing paper. It’s a new way of utilising an old process, achieving an individual effect perfectly matched to your requirements.

In an age when you have to work harder and harder to stand out, Flirt is just what you are looking for to give your work an edge. When you rediscover embossing, you reconnect with another dimension. It’s not merely a new look; it’s texture, feel, substance.

More than that, Flirt allows you to reinforce the conceptual aspect of your project. For many clients, texture is part of the offer. Think fashion, interior design, automotive, even food. Many communications can be enhanced by the clever use of an embossed stock.

What stocks are suitable to achieve striking effects?

Nearly all Spicers’ existing smooth and vellum stocks including coated papers and self adhesive are suitable to use with Flirt embossings. However, some stocks work better than others.

As a general rule, the “softer” the paper, the better the embossing results. For example, vellum stocks like Stephen emboss better than hard smooth grades like Splendorgel. So if you were to use a range like Freelife or Saxton Flirt, where you have an option, you would order vellum rather than smooth.

The ideal weight range is from 140gsm to 420gsm. Lighter stocks need to be tested as they will work with some embossing patterns, but not others.

Pre-testing is also recommended for stocks that are to be used for laser or inkjet printing.

As test sheets can be created from A4 samples, this is a quick and easy process and ensures that the job will run smoothly.

How much does Flirt cost?

Flirt is surprisingly affordable. Quantities less than 2,000 sheets attract a set-up charge, plus a per sheet rate. Quantities of 2,000 sheets and over are charged at the per sheet rate only. Two-sided embossing is charged at double the per sheet rate.

How to reserve a copy of the Flirt story

The designers, Gollings Pidgeon are using Flirt in a series of books to showcase the work of architectural photographer John Gollings. The first of these pieces uses Monza Recycled Satin stock with Flirt Thick Mesh embossing to reproduce his shots of the architect Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. It’s an incredible building, a meeting of art and architecture. Gollings’ photography of this seminal building, which shimmers and floats on South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, is no less remarkable. And embossing adds an extra dimension to it, subtly underlining the texture of the zinc with which the building is clad.

The arts of architecture, photography, design and printing come together in this little gem of a book.  Indeed it’s hard to tell if it promotes the building, the shots or the stock on which they’re printed.
